Dumbledore

What are the chances?

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Imagine this. I’ve just taken over the Hogwarts Herald blog. So I write my first post, introducing myself to everyone and giving some ideas of my plans for this blog. I got some nice welcome messages from other bloggers, which was very much appreciated.

Go to bed. Wake up. Turn on Sunrise on Channel 7 for some Sunday morning entertainment.

Big headline: ‘Dumbledore Is Gay’.

I mean really - what are the chances?

dumbledore.jpgAs David Smith said in his Observer article: ‘There could hardly have been a bigger sensation if Russell Crowe, Rod Stewart or Sven-Goran Eriksson had come out of the closet.’

So how did it happen?

Back to David Smith’s article: ‘After reading briefly from her mega-selling book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, on Friday night, Rowling took questions from an audience of 1,600 students. A 19-year-old from Colorado asked about the avuncular headmaster of Hogwarts School: ‘Did Dumbledore, who believed in the prevailing power of love, ever fall in love himself?”

‘The author replied: ‘My truthful answer to you…I always thought of Dumbledore as gay.’ The audience reportedly fell silent - then erupted into prolonged applause.’

Apparently Dumbledore always had a thing for Grindelwald, whom he defeated when they were teenagers. Does this stike anyone else as a little odd? I mean, all things considered, and even after everything else that’s happened, the Harry Potter series is still a children’s series. Or at the very least, it started out that way. It just seems to me that JK is taking a bit of a risk here - there could possibly be a bit of a backlash from conservative parents. Though, that being said, I suppose conservative parents may have alraedy put their foot down about the whole ’satanic themes’ bit.

Anyway, this was the bit that interested me the most:

JK said: ‘Yeah, that’s how I always saw Dumbledore. In fact, recently I was in a script read-through for the sixth film, and they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the script saying, “I knew a girl once, whose hair…” I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter, “Dumbledore’s gay!”‘

Weird. But kinda cool. Let me know what you think!

Now that we’re done dissecting Dumbledore’s love life, why not head over to the Pride and Opinions blog, and learn about The Differences Between Gender and Sexuality?

Dumbledore lives!

VBS_07_061__2_.jpgDespite what J.K. Rowling says about the fate of dear Professor Dumbledore - there has been a Dumbledore sighting, strangely enough, in the United States. Perhaps he’s taking some down time to explore new places…

Or at least he’s inspiring crafting. I made the Dumbledore hat for the costume. It’s a simple felted “pill box” hat out of gray-green wool, embellished with ribbon and a tassel!

“It” - again?

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

So, this is the 3rd time we’ve been tagged for the “7 random facts” meme. (is it “mem” or “meem”, btw?) This time by Brick at Encouraging Health.

Since there really aren’t many more “random” things about me, personally, I thought I’d extend the “tag” to one of our favorite subjects, Albus Dumbledore…

So, Professor Dumbledore, here’s the deal… we need 7 random facts about you…

1. The name “Dumbledore” is an old Devonshire word for “bumblebee”
2. My favourite flavour of jam is raspberry
3. My brother, Aberforth, is currently the bartender at the Hog’s Head in Hogsmeade.
4. As, you undoubtedly know from your collection of wizard cards, I, along with Nicholas Flamel, discovered the 12 uses of dragon blood.
5. One of my favorite muggle activities is ten-pin bowling
6. Upon returning to Hogwarts, I was Professor of Transfiguration.
7. Although I am supposed to be dead, Maddy refuses to believe it and therefore awoke me from my nap in my easy chair, and asked me to participate.

I believe I’ll “tag” the following professors/staff:

Severus Snape - because he owes me one;
Cuthbert Binns - as he knows so much history;
Aurora Sinistra - because it’s in the stars;
Septima Vector - because she adores numbers so;
Irma Pince - if she can’t think of anything on her own, she can look it up;
Wilkie Twycross - for reasons that are apparent; and, finally,
Hagrid - because he is so randomly good at random matters.

Thanks Professor Dumbledore (and Wikipedia!)for helping out!

Dumbledore Action Figure

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

Back in December Hogwarts Herald brought you a story about the forthcoming Harry Potter Action Figure. While impressive in its detail, it is rather lacking in its style…basically, Harry looked like an accountant.

Now we have a sneak peek at the new Dumbledore Action Figure, and it’s really impressive. I guess you don’t really have to worry about Dumbledore looking like an accountant. The really impressive thing: these figures are only 3.75″ scale…so there only 3.75 inches tall. The fact that they have such rich detail is amazing considering the small scale.

Hogwarts Herald was hard on Cards Inc. (the makers of these action figures) after Harry was revealed, but with Dumbledore they hit the nail right on the head.

There’s also a short snippet about the Dumbledore Sneak Peek over at Action-Figure.com.
